Word count and readability.
Word and character counts are the quickest way to stay within limits when writing an essay, article, ad copy, meta description or social post. The tool counts a word as any space-separated group containing a letter or digit; punctuation on its own is not a word.
The readability score measures how easily a text reads, using sentence length and syllables per word. Turkish text uses the Ateşman formula and English text the Flesch formula; the language is detected from the text. The same measure is part of the content rules in our SEO Checker.
What the score tells you.
The Ateşman score runs from 0 to 100; a higher score means an easier text. It rises when sentences get shorter and long words get simpler. For web copy the target is usually the “easy” or “medium” band.
The score needs at least three sentences and 60 words; for shorter texts the tool gives no score.
| Ateşman score | Reading level |
|---|---|
| 90–100 | Very easy |
| 70–89 | Easy |
| 50–69 | Medium |
| 30–49 | Difficult |
| 1–29 | Very difficult |
Three marks of text that gets read.
- 01
Short sentences
With an average sentence below 15–20 words, text is easier to scan on screen; a long sentence is split in two.
- 02
The answer first
Search engines and AI systems often take the answer from the first sentence right under the heading.
- 03
Coverage, not length
The right word count depends on the topic; the sub-topics competing pages cover are a better measure than length.

Word counting, what people ask.
The most asked questions about word and character counts, reading time and readability.
Back to the CounterThe text is split on spaces; every piece containing a letter or digit counts as a word. Characters are given with and without spaces; Turkish letters count as one character each.
The count with spaces includes every character; the count without spaces leaves out spaces and line breaks. Essay and publishing rules say which one they want.
Turkish text uses the Ateşman formula (198.825 − 40.175 × syllables/word − 2.610 × words/sentence) and English text the Flesch Reading Ease formula. The result runs from 0 to 100; a higher score is an easier text.
There is no single right number. A post that fully meets the search intent and covers the sub-topics competing pages cover is long enough; a short definition may need 300 words, a full guide several thousand.
On X the post limit for standard accounts is 280 characters, on Instagram a caption is 2,200 characters and on LinkedIn a post is 3,000 characters. The tool shows these limits below the text.
