Which meta tags you really need.
Meta tags sit in the page’s head section and introduce the page to search engines, social networks and messaging apps. The set that matters today is small: title, meta description, canonical, robots, and Open Graph plus the X card for sharing.
Google has not used the meta keywords tag for years; writing it does no harm but brings no benefit either. This tool builds only the tags that have an effect; for how the title and description look on Google, the SERP Preview Tool gives the pixel measure.
What each tag does.
The canonical tag names the main address when the same content has several; it lets addresses with parameters, UTM tags or case differences merge into one page.
The robots tag says whether the page goes into the index and whether its links are followed. “max-image-preview:large” allows a large image preview and is recommended for Google Discover.
| Tag | Job |
|---|---|
<title> | The blue title in results and the browser tab |
description | The description in results (Google may change it) |
canonical | The main address; merges duplicate addresses |
robots | Permission to index and follow links |
og:* | The share card on Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp |
twitter:card | The format of the X share card |
Three common meta tag mistakes.
- 01
The same description everywhere
When one template description repeats on every page, Google ignores most of them; each page’s description tells its own content.
- 02
A relative canonical address
Canonical and og:url are written as full addresses (https://…); a relative address can be misread across domains.
- 03
A forgotten noindex
A noindex added during development that stays live drops the page from search. It is one of the first checks after launch.

Meta tags, what people ask.
The most asked questions about meta tags, Open Graph and canonical.
Back to the ToolMeta tags are HTML tags in the page’s head section that visitors do not see but that introduce the page to search engines and social networks. Title, description, canonical, robots and Open Graph matter most.
No. Google does not use the meta keywords tag for ranking. Having it does no harm, but it is not worth the time.
1200×630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) shows as a large card on most platforms. Keep key elements in the centre; some apps crop the edges.
Yes; it is recommended that every page carries a canonical tag pointing to itself. Parameter and duplicate addresses then merge into the main page.
Social networks cache the card. Rescanning the address with the Facebook Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn Post Inspector shows the new image.
No. The code is generated in your browser and the image address is not loaded in the preview. The form content is not sent to our server.
